Martin is a middle school technology education (shop) teacher at Public School
4 @ Skillman in Long Island City, New York. My classes in technology education
consist of an introductory class for second and third graders of students with
autism. The students learn to use basic hand tools and some machines in order
to complete a variety of wooden projects. The students experience all processes
to complete the project. They start with planning and finish with the polyurethane
or paint or sometimes both. I am connecting with Common Core Standards by
having students reflect on their work by having them explain their experiences writing a book . They also learn how to read a ruler to a ¼ “, basic shapes, and
working together to solve some task in the shop. Students are also exposed to
different computer applications in order to help them with academic achievement.
The students are on different levels of the spectrum and I am able accomplish
something with all of them. This is my first year at the school working fulltime with
the autistic population, However, I have worked with students with special
needs for many years. I hope to share my experiences with my class and
encourage other teachers,’ technology educators (shop teachers), educators
with experie nce in autism, and parents to follow me. I welcome any suggestions.
